talking shop

When it comes to shopping, the East End is the new West End. With famous name stores, traditional family-run establishments and quirky independent retailers, you can pick up everything from a designer dress to a piece of contemporary furniture.

Just a few steps from Liverpool Street station is the East End’s answer to Covent Garden. The Sunday ‘UpMarket’ inside the Truman Brewery is a great place to shop whatever the weather, with a treasure trove of jewellery, vintage clothes, handbags, accessories, lamps, art and photography, accompanied by food and drink stalls. A few minutes walk will then take you to Old and New Spitalfields, one of London’s most historic trading areas, which today combines traditional market stalls with a modern retail experience.

If you’re more into luxury goods, the exclusive Royal Exchange near the Bank of England is probably the place for you. With its designer boutiques and posh nosh, it’s state-of-the-art retail therapy.

Markets

East-End markets come alive on Sundays. Enjoy the bustle and banter on Petticoat Lane, open Monday to Friday and Sundays 9am to 4pm, as traders flog leather goods, toys, watches and replica designer handbags. Trawl the sea of bric-a-brac, fabulous furniture, distinctive clothes and delightful artefacts on Brick Lane, open Sundays until 2pm. At Old Spitalfields Market, explore the labyrinth of traditional market stalls and unusual shops and soak up the unique atmosphere or try New Spitalfields at Bishop's Square with its array of independent shops, restaurants, cafés and boutiques along its contemporary concourse. Every day except Sunday. Or for a more down-to-earth market, head to Columbia Road, open Sundays 8am to 2pm, where the flowers are as colourful as the characters that sell them.

Shopping Streets

The Laden Showroom on Brick Lane displays and sells a wide range of womenswear, menswear and accessories including hats, jewellery, bags, belts and shoes. Between Brick Lane and Spitalfields, All Saints is the place to discover contemporary London fashion. Pieces are created using traditional artisan techniques, with broken bride dresses, soft blanket cardies and tattered floral prints for ladies and British fine wools, flannels and Harris tweed for men. Located in London's creative quarter, Hoxton Boutique is a large gallery-like store with a Studio 54-inspired twist. Mirrored walls, disco balls and neon lighting provide a funky setting for vintage bargains, footwear, accessories, cutting-edge designerwear and the store's own +HOBO+ label.
